I've owned several lite-on products, mostly cd and dvd recorders for the computer and they have been rock solid. I saw this home dvd recorder and for the low price of $75 (back in January of 2007) this was a great buy. The navigation system is simple, but intuitive. It records to several different types of media and I have not had one problem recording to any DVD blank media (and I go through a lot of brands). I like the fact that you can select different recording quality, from 1 hr (very high quality), 2 hr, 3hr (very nice for those movies slightly longer than 2 hours), up to 6 hrs.
I have owned this for about a year and I couldn't be happier. I'm looking for another one as I type:-). Don't buy this unit unless you don't mind that its TV tuner is MONO (NOT Stereo) and thus all the DVDs you make of TV shows with it will be in MONO, not stereo. Sadly, this is a problem that all of the lower-end Chinese home DVD recorders have - and is not mentioned anywhere (you have to buy them, find out it's only a mono turner, and then return them).
A shame because my favorite DVD.PLAYERS. are cheap Chinese ones. But having a mono tuner is absolute stupidiy. I have six DVD players, a DVD recorder that's stereo (Sharp), and deal with Divx, multi-region discs, and DVD recording every day. Why would anyone bother with a DVD recorder with mono sound when a $39 HiFi VCR at least has stereo sound?
In the home DVD recorder market, all the 'off-brand' recorders I've tried (about 8 to date, from this one to GoVideo's) have mono tuners. If you buy a unit from a more well-known brand (Sony, Sharp, etc) you will get a stereo tuner, but will lose out on a bunch of features only found in off-brand recorders. But not having stereo sound is such a fault, it completely wipes out any of the other features a unit like this has (it'd be like saying 'this DVD recorder does everything. Oh but just so you know, it only records in black and white.' ) Who cares about divx or all-format recordings if all your recordings are going to be in Mono? Of course it will record in stereo if you're recording something from another source (say, copying an old VHS tape) and you use the inputs in back. But for something like that it's almost easier just to use the computer.
The reason people buy home DVD recorders is that it's a way for them to record and save (SUPPOSEDLY in better quality than VHS) TV shows they like. Well gee, who wants to 'upgrade' to MONO SOUND? It IS a shame all of these Chinese off-brand recorders seem to source their parts from the same place, and all have mono tuners. The other features on this player are great, and BestBuy had it for $89 the other week. But I immediately returned it as I don't consider 'mono sound' from the TV an upgrade. Maybe one of these days they'll learn that in 2006, mono sound is not tolerable for a DVD recorder. I'm looking for another one as I type:-). This unit I picked up after I sold my Samsung R120. Because it was not a household-name brand like Sony, Pioneer, etc. You would think that it's not as good as the others. If you think that, you'd be pleasantly surprised.
While this unit doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a more expensive recorder, it will accept all different formats of DVD, from the +-R, +-RW, or the Dual Layer +R discs. If you have a choice in formats, go for the +RW. For one, the unit will allow you to erase certain titles that you recorded (which is good if you're recording TV shows) and reuse the disc space later with the +RW.
And you don't need to finalize the +RW discs so once you're done recording, just hit Eject and pop it in your portable DVD player. It has no front display on it and it's white, so it may clash with your entertainment setup, but it makes up for it in terms of usability. It has VCR +, which is OK for one time recordings. Divx playback is also a big plus and it supports Divx On-Demand. The sound-sync is also fairly good.
It drifts only slightly but it's not as out-of-sync as some DVD recorders out there. All in all, I'd highly recommend this model for those who are looking for a simple DVD recorder to quickly record shows on from a Tivo or from CableTV. It's small, compact, and while the user interface looks a little dated, it gives you enough options and is easy to navigate through that most people won't even need to use the manual to get started. If you are looking to transfer your home movies to DVD, this is the one to buy. I hooked it up in 2 minutes, and was working fine. I bought the +R discs, and they work great.
Here is the neat thing that they don't write about in the manual: I was concerned that I would always have to keep my eye on the recorder when transferring, as I didn't want it to record static. What happened, to my amazement, was incredible. It actually paused the recording automatically when it got to the end! All I had to do was to put another tape in, and press Play on the video camera, and it started recording again automatically! I am a technofile, and have many electronics.
If you are looking at something simple, that actually works well, for not alot of money, this is definately the one! Thanks LiteOn! I am very pleasantly surprised with this product. I can use my VCR, Speaker system, DVD player (5 disc) and DVD Recorder all at the same time. The DVDs play in both computers, so I can view whatever I have recorded on my laptop or desktop computers. It was fun Sat.
Night to record 2 movies while watching a third movie (all broadcast at the same time). I used the VCR for recording the PBS movie - no pesky commercials. The DVD skips commercials easily. I bought a $3 video 'Y' to connect both DVD player and recorder to my VCR.
